Curlew was built by Matthews as a "38 Double-Cabin Cruiser" in 1931 in Port Clinton, Ohio. The vessel was lengthened in the cockpit by four feet in the early 1980's by Port Townsend shipwrights -- hull shape and basic boat configuration were not changed.
Records from prior owners indicate the vessel has been hauled every year of her life for inspection and regular maintenance. The current owner has continued that tradition and care. Hull planking, fittings, frames, deck and house are original.
A previous owner removed the original engine and installed a Detroit Perkins diesel, which powers the boat today. Curlew is the only one left of the 1931 38 DC Cruiser and is one of a kind. The current owner has owned this vessel for eight years and is her fourth owner in her 81 years.
